* Library of Congress, Map Collections Comprises over 4.5 million holdings, some of which available online, including Civil War; World War II; Panoramic Cities 1847-1929; and Railroads 1828-1900. * David Rumsey Map Collection Historical map collection with over 57,000 digitized maps and images online, many of which illustrate evolution of nation's history, culture and population. Project of Cartography Associates digital publishing company based in San Francisco founded by David Rumsey, whose entire collection of 150,000 maps is one of largest private map collections in U.S. * Osher Map Library, University of Southern Maine Academic program focusing on cartographic history and education. Military History * U.S. Army Center of Military History Responsible for recording official history of the Army and advising Army Staff on historical matters. Online resources include research guides by conflict and time period ranging from colonial times through war on terrorism; photographs; selected digital editions of several printed histories (e.g. The Continental Army); profiles of all Medal of Honor recipients; directory of Army museums in states and foreign countries. * Naval History and Heritage Command Online resources include essays on wars and conflicts; manuscripts of orders and other documents going back to 19th century; photographs and histories of major battles and engagements. Also links to official U.S. Navy Museum. * Air Force History and Museums Gateway site for Air Force history at Air Force Historical Research Agency (repository for over 70 million pages of documents; also posts photographs; timelines and statistics); National Museum of the U.S. Air Force (located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, near Dayton, Ohio, oldest and largest military aviation museum in world, Web site publishes photographs of on-site exhibits); and Air Force Historical Support Division (book and article writing element, online titles include The U S Army Air Forces in World War II; The Story of the Atomic Bomb; The U S Air Force in the Vietnamese Conflict).
